Incoterms® are terms of sale that specify who is in charge of making arrangements for the payment and delivery of the items from the time they leave the seller’s door until they get to the buyer’s intended destination.
The name “Incoterms®” is short for “International Commercial Terms,” which are periodically updated and are defined by the International Chamber of Commerce.
The ICC published the most recent edition of the Incoterms®, also known as “Incoterms® 2020,” in September 2019. This edition made a few significant adjustments to the Incoterms®. All sales contracts will be subject to Incoterms® 2020 as of 1 January 2020 unless the parties specifically state that they choose to continue using Incoterms® 2010. There is a chance that some clients will continue to utilize Incoterms® 2010 as the transfer to Incoterms® 2020 is not required.
An agreement known as Incoterms® exists between the buyer and the seller. Before the shipping is started, the buyer and the seller must ultimately come to an understanding over who will bear what costs and risks.
